- MEDIUM ROAST. These are fresh whole coffee beans, roasted to a medium level and free from any staleness or oiliness caused by prolonged shelf life. The same premium whole bean coffee that we offer at our retail locations, it has a big body, balanced medium acidity, and a crisp sweet finish with no oil on the beans. Sourced from 100% Arabica coffee, this medium roast is well-balanced, sweet, bold, and smooth.
- Medium-Dark roast coffee is of a brown color and rarely has an oily surface. These coffees typically have a medium acidity and body, along with a well-rounded flavor profile. Roasting the coffee beans to this level helps to maintain many of the unique flavors of the coffee's origin, while also starting to bring out the deep caramel sweetness of a longer roast. As a result, these coffees have a good balance and are slightly darker and sweeter. However, some of the brighter notes of a light roast may be lost in the process.
- Medium Roast. These are fresh whole coffee beans that have been roasted to perfection and are not stale or loaded with oil from sitting on the shelf. This is the same high-quality whole bean coffee that we serve in our retail locations. The cupping notes reveal a big body with a well-balanced medium acidity, and a crisp and sweet finish. These beans have no oil on them. This medium roast whole bean coffee is sourced from 100% arabica coffee that is well balanced, sweet, bold in flavor, and yet smooth.
- Light roast coffee is a type of coffee that has a light brown color and no oil on the surface of the beans. These coffees are roasted in order to preserve the unique characteristics of the bean. If the beans were well grown, processed, and roasted, they can produce a wide variety of flavors, aromas, and aftertastes. Typically, light roast coffee has a crisp acidity, a mellow body, and bright flavors.

Hello
Let’s look at this delightful coffee set by Vocanic Cult, which you can save for yourself or use for giftgiving.
For those who like to see up,close, I’ve attached an unboxing video of the gift box contents
For those who like to skip to the gist….Let’s take a look at what’s to like here:
1. The first thing that we have is a medium roast called Vanuatu. Can’t wait to try that …this looks non flavor enhanced
2.
3. Second thing included here is an Ethiopian medium roast bean with notes of strawberry, merlot, and chocolate. (I have a feeling that my spouse is going to enjoy this one!)
4. Comes with a smooth operating manual bean grinder, as well as glass jar with aluminum lid for storing the ground beans—which is really nice as well.
5.
6. I think this is an absolutely delightful gift (gift box ready, btw, as seen in attached pics). Or a nice, indulgent treat for oneself.
Let’s all live long and prosper! Until next time,
Dr. Jay
This coffee is Awesome! They both have a very Rich aroma, and great tasting brew. I love the flavor so much. There is an Ethiaopia blend and Vanuatu blend. Both have very different flavor, and richness levels.
Very good stuff.
This set comes with a manual grinder, and two glass jars with one lid.
I will be buying from this seller again!
This is a really fun coffee/hand grinder set. As you can see from my photos, it presents beautifully as a gift for your favorite coffee connoisseur. That being said, we are definitely keeping this set!
VANUATU FLAVORS
The Vanuatu beans yield a smooth coffee with rich notes of vanilla and macadamia. The milder flavor would make this an excellent choice when serving a wide variety of people at a gathering. However, make no mistake, do not confuse “mild” with “lack of flavor.” This coffee delivers plenty of complex notes.
ETHIOPIAN FLAVORS
By comparison, the Ethiopian beans yield a slightly bolder (but not aggressive) coffee. This one is our family’s favorite due to fruity undertones paired with notes of chocolate (think raspberry chocolate truffle).
HAND GRINDER – PERFECT FOR WHEN ELECTRICITY IS INACCESSIBLE
The hand grinder is both charming and practical. The handle folds inward so it is easier to store/pack. My first impression was that this grinder is perfect for camping or hiking when you don’t have electricity. Also, if you experience a power outage (but have access to non-electric cooking fuel) you can still have yourself a nice pour over!
FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, I am very pleased with this product. Of course, taste is subjective, so you might pick up on some different flavors. Regardless, this organic coffee is richly flavorful and top quality. The grinder is fun and practical. Definitely two thumbs up!
What we have here are two bags of 16 ounce whole bean coffees and a manual adjustable grind coffee hand powered mill packed neatly in a lovely gift-able box. The colorful outer box and attractive arrangement of the contents makes for a lovely presentation as a gift.
THE GRINDER:
__The grinder is not a burr grinder--it is on the lines of a pepper mill style grinder. I was pleasantly surprised to see the grinder came with not one but TWO jars for the coffee. The jars are a screw fit to the grinder. Once you grind the beans, you unscrew the jar and use the coffee. If you ground more than you need, you can use the single enclosed lid to preserve it till tomorrow (or your second brew). The jars only have a practical capacity of about 7 fluid ounces--so about 1 good size pot plus maximum.
__ A better use for the grinder is for 1-2 cup grinds, IMHO. Why? Well, if you've ever uses a pepper grinder (or a coffee hand grinder) before, you know how long it takes to get a teaspoon of product--for coffee you'll need at least 4 times that much, so you will be grinding for a while. Also, the fill capacity of the grinder is small, so grinding only enough for a cup or two without refilling the grinder with beans is more practical for a cup or two versus a pot. The bright side is your grinding effort definitely makes for VERY fresh ground coffee!
__I have a burr grinder, so I won't be using this on a regular basis, EXCEPT during a power failure (we have a gas burner available for heating water), and I would be happy to use this then.
THE COFFEES:
__I received 2 packages: one" Single Origin Vanuatu Pacific Island Medium Roast" and the other "Mother Station Natural Ethiopia Single Origin Medium Roast". Both labels have :"Volcanic Cult Finest/Organic/Supreme" appearing over the names. However, there is NO USDA Organic certification, nor ingredient list on the package (not sure a list is needed for a single ingredient?). They are distributed by "Vanunt, LLC" in Cambridge, MA.
__The "expert" flavor notes on the Ethiopia coffee are "Strawberry, Milk chocolate, Merlot". No such expert flavor description is available for the Vanuatu coffee. Taste is so subjective that I decline to try to describe coffee further, except to say these are medium roasts (both).
Interestingly the beans appear to be of 2 different sizes, since the first bag is larger than the second despite the fact that they both weigh the same.
__ I was worried about how fresh the beans would be (of course, how do you ever truly know that?). On these bags there was a date over 9 months in the future from the day I received them (both bags). Both dates were identical.
__The packaging indicates this maker (Volcanic cult) tries to source from volcanic regions (FYI).
BOTTOM LINE
__This is a nice combination gift for someone, and two full pounds of single origin beans (organic but w/o certification) is not cheap. I am glad to have it but have to deduct a bit for not being able to verify its organic status.
__4.7 stars.
